Rama Krishna Sangem
Ruling TRS (Telangana Rashtra Samithi) has become BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi). A crisp one line resolution to this extent was unanimously passed by TRS extended state executive, attended by MLAs, MPs and other state-run corporation chairpersons at Telangana Bhavan, party headquarters, on the auspicious Dasara festival, October 5, Wednesday. Chief Minister and party supremo KCR announced the change.
Though some slightly variant words like Bharatiya and Bharata were considered before, Chief Minister KCR (K Chandrasekhar Rao) finally settled for Bharat, which is mentioned in the Preamble of Indian Constitution – India that is Bharat – as the final choice. This way, we can assume that TRS is now expanding to the entire country – through its model of policies and good governance.
KCR in his brief speech mainly touched upon the reasons for India’s backwardness on many fronts. “It’s a matter of shame that a small country like Bangladesh is racing ahead in development, while India still lagging behind,” said KCR. Economic growth and right policies to put India on the global map of developed nations. He indicated that Telangana model of governance will be expanded to the entire country.
National presence:
The presence of former Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and his party JD(S) seniors and leaders of VCK (Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi), meaning liberated tigers front from Tamil Nadu signaled the coming course of expansion of BRS. VCK, formerly Dalit Panthers of India, is founded in 1982, to pursue the goal of social justice. VCK now has two MPs and 4 MLAs in Tamil Nadu.
VCK president and Chidambaram MP Tholkappiyan Thirumavalan is noteworthy at a time when DMK boss and Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin is striving for social justice at the national level. In 2021 TN assembly polls, he was with Stalin led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA). Sources said, Thirumavalan will either merge his party or work with BRS. It is to be seen, if he continues in SPA which also includes Congress.
JD (S) from Karnataka is a bigger party. Kumaraswamy led JD(S) has 1 Lok Sabha, 1 Rajya Sabha MPs and 30 MLAs in the state assembly. Kumaraswamy is likely to contest in alliance with BRS in coming Karnataka assembly elections next year. JD(S) has its strongholds in southern parts of Karnataka. Now, BRS will help it win northern Karnataka or erstwhile Hyderabad state parts.
In the same way, BRS will also expand its footprint to parts of Maharashtra which were earlier with Hyderabad state before 1948. Not only that, the presence of large number of Telugu speaking people from Telangana districts are settled across Maharashtra – like Mumbai and Bhiwandi. BRS will field candidates from these areas.
A team of now BRS led by Telangana Planning Board vice chairman B Vinod Kumar left for Delhi just after the change of party name. They will meet Election Commission of India (EC) on October 6 and submit the resolution on the renaming of TRS as BRS. In usual course, EC will take sometime after calling for objections, if any, on this and then will notify the new name.
Celebrations across Telangana:
Ranks of BRS turned TRS celebrated this bold move of their leader KCR on the day of Dasara. The level of celebrations reflected their faith in the leadership of KCR in leading the new national party. When KCR founded TRS in April 2001, not many were with him, but, now he leads one of the largest political parties in India, besides heading Telangana government for 8 years, since 2014.
