Green India Challenge founder leader and former Rajya Sabha MP J Santosh Kumar this Sunday, October 6, posted on X four photos of migratory birds on a water body near Hyderabad city. All the birds are of large crane species sitting pretty on water bodies, lakes around Hyderabad. The city as well as other nearby areas of Telangana are famous for lakes that draw migratory birds from far away.
Himayat Sager, Osman Sagar and Manjeera reservoir are some of the popular lakes that attract migratory birds from as far places as central Asia and Russia. But, there are dozens of other smaller lakes and ponds in Hyderabad that too are destinations for these avian guests. Interestingly, these birds know the exact location of their destinations without any external help. Bird watchers say, they can fly hundreds of km at a stretch and reach the points in a few days.
We can see all the birds clicked by Santosh are of big necks and strong wings, most of grey plumage. This suits them best in navigating long distances and wither changes in climatic conditions. They stay here for about a couple of months and have enough of food and leave again for their homes. This is an amazing feature of migratory birds, which never fail their annual sojourns.
Hyderabad is home for at least a dozen of such birds. They include Spur-winged Lapwing and Plovers, Eurasian spoonbill, shoveler, pintall, and sandpipers are the other regular migratory birds here. Besides Hyderabad, there are many other lakes and reservoirs in Telangana that too draw these winged guests. We can also find tourists taking pics of these migratory birds at our lakes.
