“I have lived in this koti area since 40 years and I am shocked to know that i am not aware of these historic structures in my own neighborhood” said Artist Satish participant of VoH badge 2024 programme.

The Residency area walk was conducted today by ICOMOS India as part of Voice of Heritage badge programme 2024 in collaboration with DHAT.Young dynamic Conservation architect Ar.Bindu Bhargavi Ch led the walk with 50 participants showing the examples of unprotected heritage structures associated with the British residency such as hashmat gunj gate, clock tower , residency surgeons bunglow,and others.

During the walk she has explained the history of the bank street and the residency wall.Participants were taken to palmers tomb located in the troop bazar and old Laxmi Narayan temple which is in neglected state, said a press release.

Dr.Vasanta sobha talked about their campaigns of save hashmat gunj gate and opening up the visual connection of the residency by replacing the stone wall with grill. Mr. Ved Kumar Chairman of DHAT, who graced the occasion as guest of honor, said that in spite of working on the city’s history and heritage for so many years he has discovered the more hidden treasures today.

 

British Residency, a coherent landscape

ICOMOS South zone representative Prof. G. S. V. Surya Narayana Murthy, senior Conservation architect, ” though the historic structures visited today seem isolated and scattered Ar. Bindu Bhargavi has logically presented the connections of the British residency as a coherent historic cultural landscape.”

Ar. Indira Kolli, senior Conservation architect was appalled at the poor condition of the heritage structures especially the loss of the Anglo vernacular school demolished recently and replaced by new structure. She expressed the urgent need to accelerate our efforts to save heritage from further loss.

The participants shared their experiences of attending the VoH programme. Mrs.Sravanthi narra senior architect congratulated the students for utilizing the opportunity to be part of VoH programme led by experts,which she missed during her student days. Ms.Swetha and Ms.Vaishnavi, students of JNAFAU showed the quick sketches they have made during the walk.

Mr. Ved Kumar has distributed the VoH working badges 2024 to the participants. The participants are asked to make reels ,posters,short videos on their experiences and prizes would be given. The organisers announced the next session to be held on 27th April 2024, at Musi and OGH.
