Vata Savitri Poornima Vratam festival is celebrated on June 10, Tuesday is celebrated, worshiping trees and nature. Generally, women perform this Vrat or Vratam, by offering traditional puja to trees. Interestingly, this festival comes along with south west monsoon of rainy season. This is an age-old tradition, reflecting power of love, dedication and faith in universal compassion. But, this festival is mostly celebrated in the North India.
Adilabad district’s Mukra K village that abuts Maharashtra witnessed this festival as women of that village offered prayers to trees in their village. The trees were planted by long ago by the volunteers of Green India Challenge, founded and led by former MP J Santosh Kumar. He shared on X the photos of the women offering puja to the trees planted through his initiative sometime back. Excel India in fact carried stories of how women of Mukra K joined hands with GIC’s sapling plantation mission.
“From saplings to sacred trees! On Vata Saviri Poornima, women of Mukra K village celebrated by performing rituals around trees planted through our #GreenIndiaChalelnge initiative. It’s inspiring to see how these saplings have grown into mighty guardians of nature,” said Santosh in his post. Naturally Santosh is a happy person as the saplings planted as part of GIC drives were not left withered, but grown into green leafy trees.
What this festival all about?
Economic Times carried a story on the background of this Vata Savitri Vratam. Married women fast all through the day and follow some rituals, based epic of Savitri and her husband Satyawant. We all know how Savitri convinced the Lord Yama to get back her husband’s life, through her power of devotion and intelligence. Commemorating this tale, women pay their pujas to Vata Vriksha, a symbol of long life and loyalty.
If we look at this from modern angle, we can the participation of women in preserving nature and protecting trees.
