Former Rajya Sabha MP and Green India Challenge founder J Santosh Kumar this Sunday, May 26, captured on his camera lens a beautiful small bird of cuckoo family. He posted on X four pictures of this small  red hued tiny winged beauty sitting pretty on a green tree branch, coolly feasting of black fruits. Small birds are the most that enjoy rainy season. Pre-monsoon season that has set in Hyderabad for the last few days is a matter of happy times for these birds. They came out of their sweltering summer hideouts and feast on a variety of food – fruits, nuts and insects. Ornithologists say, small birds prefer this spring to rainy season, primarily for breeding as well. They move around all over to escape from hot summer but return homes during monsoon.

Their body and plumage colors vary from place to place and geographies. The colors are basically mix with greenery and flowers, to provide them cover from predators. So, this is the best season for anyone to see the myriad colors of  birds in their natural habitats – trees. Small birds mostly live on trees, but sometimes visit bushes too.  Don’t fails to notice them on your balcony grills too. Experts say, these small birds play a great role in pollination and spread of flora.

Based on their color and shape, people worship them according to their local cultures. But small birds may not be receptive to human offerings of food. So, the best way to help them to promoting greenery around us. That’s the motto of Santosh’s Green India Challanege too. How about encouraging our youngsters to take up projects on how a number of birds share their space on a single tree?
