2 IIT-H professors elected fellows of Royal Society

The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) is proud to announce a momentous achievement as two of its Distinguished Professors — Prof. Chennupati Jagadish, Australian National University, and Dr. Mallikarjun Tatipamula, CTO of Ericsson —have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Society (FRS), one of the most prestigious scientific honours globally.

A Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) is a prestigious title awarded to individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge, including mathematics, engineering science, and medical science. The Royal Society is the oldest continuously existing scientific academy in the world, making the Fellowship a significant honour. Prof. Chennupati Jagadish and Dr. Mallikarjun Tatipamula join the world’s most eminent scientists as Fellows of the Royal Society — a recognition awarded to individuals who have made substantial contributions to the improvement of natural knowledge in science, engineering, and medicine.

Both honorees trace their roots to India and maintain close academic ties with IITH. Their elevation to FRS honours the intellectual heritage of the country and reflects the strength of India’s contribution to global scientific advancement, said a press release from IIT Hyderabad.

 

Pioneering work in semiconductors 

A Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Australian National University, Prof. Jagadish is renowned for his pioneering work in semiconductor nanotechnology, photonics, and optoelectronics. He was born in a small village, Vallurupalem, in AP and grew up in a smaller village, Arekayalapadu, in Telangana and obtained his BSc Physics from ANU-Guntur, MSc(Tech) Appl Physics from AU and MPhil and PhD in Physics from Delhi University.

He is currently serving as Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Physics and Electronic Materials Engineering at the Australian National University. He is the first Indian to receive the highest civilian honour, Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), from the Governor General of Australia. He has received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from the President of India.

Prof. Chennupati Jagadish is the first Indian and non-European Australian elected President of the Australian Academy of Science, currently advising the Australian Government and Parliament. He is a Fellow of major science and engineering academies across Australia, India, Europe, the US, UK, China, and TWAS. In 2025, he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Royal Society (FRS). He also received honorary doctorates from the University of Surrey and Nottingham Trent University in 2024.

 

Big role in 5G development

A global technology leader and CTO at Ericsson, Dr. Mallikarjun Tatipamula h Dr. Mallikarjun Tatipamula has played a transformative role in the development of 5G and next-generation networks. Born in Warangal, Telangana, Dr Mallik is a globally respected leader in telecommunications. He holds a BTech from NIT Warangal, an MTech from IIT Madras, and a PhD from the University of Tokyo.
