Atishi 43 will be the new chief minister of Delhi. Presently Delhi education minister and ruling AAP’s politburo member, Atishi – her full name Marlena Singh, will take up the position of her mentor and present CM Arvind Kejriwal who had announced his plans to resign. Kejriwal is expected to submit his paper to Delh Lt Governor VK Saxena by September 17 evening, after that Atishi will be invited to from the next government.
Atishi, Oxford educated daughter of Delhi university professors – Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi – is a Rhodes scholar. She joined politics, through AAP in 2013 and now represents Kalkaji assembly seat in Delhi. Atishi is considered to be a close confidant of Kejriwal. She supported each and every of Kejriwal’s decisions in recent times. When Kejriwal was in jail for about six months, Atishi officiated for him in the cabinet.
Kejriwal had to step down
Kejriwal had to step down as the Supreme Court has put a condition for his bail last week that he should not sign any file as the CM. This made his continuation in the post of CM untenable. Knowing this, Kejriwal had announced his decision to step down till the assembly elections and appoint someone in his place. BJP alleged that he would appoint his wife Sunita as the CM, but Atishi emerged as the choice of Kejriwal and the AAP MLAs.
Kejriwal said that he would accept the chief minister’s post only if people certify his honesty in the Delhi assembly elections. “We will go to the court of people to prove our innocence,” he added. He also demanded that the elections be held in November 2024 instead of February 2025.
“Some people say that we will not be able to work because of restrictions imposed by the Supreme Court. Even they did not leave any stone unturned in imposing restrictions on us… If you think I am honest, vote for me in large numbers. I will sit on the CM’s chair only after being elected. The elections are supposed to be held in February. I demand elections be held in November with Maharashtra elections… Till elections are held, someone else from the party will be the chief minister. In the next 2-3 days, a meeting of the MLAs will be held, where the next CM will be elected,” he said, per ANI.
