A video of an elderly woman weeping beside a Peepal tree she had planted two decades ago, after it was cut down, has gone viral on social media. The incident, which occurred in Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon district, has left the entire village in a state of anger and grief.
The clip shows the elderly woman crying inconsolably near a freshly cut Peepal tree. Villagers say the woman treated the tree like her own child. She watered it daily, worshipped it, and considered it part of her faith. When the tree was felled, she broke down, holding its stump and crying bitterly. Those who gathered around her also grew emotional.
The incident has angered residents, who allege that the tree was cut at the behest of a local land dealer, Imran Memon. They claim the tree stood on government land and was a site of local devotion. According to villagers, Imran conspired with an associate, Prakash Kosare, to have the tree removed.
Villagers stood by her
In response, villagers, led by Suresh Kumar Tiwari and Sanjay Singh, the former sarpanch of Sarragondi, went to the Khairagarh police station demanding action. A complaint was filed by villager Pramod Patel, following which police registered Crime No. 464/2025 under Sections 298 and 3(5) of the Indian Penal Code and began an investigation.
During interrogation, Imran reportedly confessed to planning the removal of the Peepal tree located on government land opposite his purchased plot. He told police that he wanted to level the land. Prakash assisted him by cutting down the tree with a wood-cutting machine, while Imran stood nearby and watched.
Villagers said the elderly woman’s pain reflected their collective grief. “She cared for that tree like her own son. We all felt the same connection. Watching her cry broke our hearts,” Suresh Kumar Tiwari, a villager, told India Today. Former sarpanch Sanjay Singh said, “This was not just a tree; it was a symbol of faith and the village’s devotion. Cutting it down was an emotional blow for everyone.”
Following the incident, villagers have planted a new Peepal tree at the same spot and pledged to protect it. The elderly woman, who once nurtured the old tree for 20 years, was among the first to offer prayers at the new sapling.
