Former BRS Rajya Sabha MP and Green India Challenge (GIC) founder J Santosh Kumar has called for spreading greenery by planting more saplings in Assam, to save the state from perennial floods. GIC in association with another environmental organisation Igniting Minds would be planting more trees in Assam which witnessed heavy floods in recent rains.
In a post on X on September 18, Santosh said: “Assam faces a looming climate change with a 330 per cent rise in climate risk by 2050. Alarmingly, nearly 60 per cent of the districts of Assam are highly vulnerable. Initiatives like our #GreenIndiaChallenge and the “One Crore Plantation project” by Igniting Minds are crucial in mitigating these severe impacts<“.
“Indigenous communities play a pivotal role in conserving biodiversity and leading climate action. Let’s stand together to support Assam and champion global climate justice,”said Santosh in the post. Igniting Minds founder M Karunakar Reddy too in another post a day before said that as many as 74 saplings would be planted in Pam Gaon, Assam, as part of the GIC.
“Together, we are taking strides towards a greener and more sustainable future,” said Reddy. However, he said that the occasion to plant these saplings coincided with the 74th birthday of PM Narendra Modi. Reddy thanked @JadavPayeng ji, @SantoshKumarBRS ji and @Nawegate ji and all volunteers for making this mission possible. GIC is joining hands with many like minded organisation to spread the cause of greenery.
They both joined a sapling plantation programme in Assam. The event was participated by Assam MLA Jadev Payeng who is also a Padma Shree awardee on the occasion. “Witnessed the incredible community efforts in planting conservation. Empowering women’s groups with Rs 10,000 each to nurture saplings, driving reforestation & climate resilience. Together with GIC and Navodaya, we aim to safeguard the eastern Himalayas unique biodiversity,” said Santosh in another post
