Rama Krishna Sangem
BRS former MP and Green India Challenge founder activist J Santosh Kumar never misses the season’s flavor in his weekend photos. I mean, he keeps in mind running season’s impact on the birds that dot his posts on X. This is a beautiful way to connect the nature with wildlife through photography he adopted since 3-4 years
This Sunday, July 27, he posted four pics of some pigeons, or doves as one of his social media followers commented, obviously enjoying the drizzly rains that lash Hyderabad and surroundings for the last few days. Lovely weather i9t is and we all enjoyed it too. Here are these doves, that sit on a branch of a tree, dripping rain water.
What caught my attention is the fact that pigeons or doves sitting on a tree, as they are mostly seen on rooftops or ground. I found many answers to this in the Wikipedia. Santosh’s photos caught these birds on a tree, instead of on the ground, thus stirring some curiosity among us. Here’s what the wiki and quora say about it:
Safety from predators
While they are often seen on flat surfaces like rooftops and streets, pigeons are also known to perch on tree branches, especially in areas with dense tree cover. Their feet are adapted for perching on branches, though they may prefer flatter surfaces for feeding and nesting due to their ground-feeding habits and vulnerability to predators in trees.
While they can perch on branches, they may find flat surfaces like rooftops and ledges more comfortable for resting and nesting. Pigeons do build nests in trees, though they may also build them on ledges of buildings or other structures. Urban environments provide fewer natural predators compared to rural areas. Man-made structures, like buildings, offer more cover and a higher vantage point, making pigeons feel safer.
Pigeons have adapted to living in close proximity to humans. Their natural behavior has evolved to take advantage of the resources available in cities, leading to a preference for urban habitats. Finally, the GIC leader fixes in his camera doves, tree and rain this weekend!
