In a significant step toward enhancing employability and professional readiness among youth in Meghalaya, IIM Shillong—through its North East Centre for Community Impact and Engagement (NE-CCIE)—successfully conducted a series of Business Communication and Presentation Skills workshops across leading institutions in Shillong. The initiative, held under the Chief Minister’s Business Catalyst Initiative, spanned from 19th to 30th May 2025 and reached students at MIT University, Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), and William Carey University.

The workshops were facilitated by Dr. Cassie DeFilippo, an International English Language Fellow with the U.S. Department of State, and were organized in close collaboration with PRIME Meghalaya and the Government of Meghalaya. Designed for students from diverse academic backgrounds including business, tourism, finance, and marketing, the sessions focused on nurturing essential communication skills critical for success in today’s evolving professional landscape, said a press release from IIM Shillong.

Preparing for real world collaboration

Participants explored various facets of effective communication, such as professional project writing, distinguishing between formal and informal language, using active and passive voice appropriately in business contexts, and the responsible integration of AI tools into communication tasks. The importance of team communication and conflict resolution in workplace settings was also emphasized, preparing students for real-world collaboration.

The workshops culminated in a business pitch presentation, where students showcased their learning through structured, team-based proposals—demonstrating both their communication proficiency and problem-solving abilities.

This collaborative initiative between IIM Shillong, government agencies, and academic partners emphasized a shared commitment to empowering Meghalaya’s youth. By strengthening critical soft skills and fostering a spirit of innovation, the program aims to create a more confident, job-ready, and entrepreneurial minded generation.
