Rama Krishna Sangem
BRS Rajya Sabha MP and Green India Challenge leader J Santosh Kumar this Sunday, August 13, clicked on his camera four birds – symbolizing colours of monsoon. We call it colours of monsoon, because these birds are seen only where there is greenery and water. What best is the season for us than the southwest monsoon? He posted these pics on X as part of his #WeeklyDoseofPhotography.
Santosh has been tweeting pics of nature and wildlife for about a year as part of his mission to create awareness among people about nature, environment and ecology. The beautiful winged guests of our greenery certainly reflect the quality of our ecology – otherwise, we cannot spot them amidst us. Birds are energetic and intelligent compared to other terrestrial animals – simply because of their mobility advantage, say ornithologists.
4 birds, harmony with nature
On Santosh’s X handle – @SantoshkumarBRS, you can find four birds – Grey Minivet, Humboldt Heron, Egret and Moorhen (as per Heeresh Dubey, who commented on X, the second bird is Madagascar pond Heron). All these birds are seen at wetlands – or closer to water bodies or where enough tree cover is there. They all except minivets, can fly long distances and fed on aqua food.
Another common thing among them is their vulnerability to human activity and endangered status. Of them all, Heron is fast declining as its population faces extinction, as per a bird watcher from Hyderabad. Minivets are held in captivity for their good looks. Moorhens, they called son in view of their dark coloured bodies, too are finding it difficult to breed, as their nests on trees are under threat.
We hope, all the nature lovers and bird watchers shall contribute their mite to conserve them all. One best and simple way to do it is to grow more trees. And the next best thing is to create awareness among people on the birds’ role in nature and our environment.
