Chemistry is vital for ensuring overall growth of a country, felt the speaking at the opening session of a two day national conference on Chemistry for A Sustainable Future held at Library Auditorium of Palamuru University in Mahabubnagar on February 27, Tuesday. There is a need to promote more research and studies in chemistry at all levels for this purpose.
Palamuru University Vice Chancellor Prof LB Laxmikant Rathod was the chief guest and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad, director Dr K Srinivas Reddy delivered the key-note address at the inaugural session. Prof P Pavan Kumar, Registrar of the university was the guest of honour. Dr P Sudarsanam, (IICT), Dr G Rajender (IISER), Dr DS Ramakrishna (VSSIT) and Dr K Shiva Kumar (KCU) gave lectures.
In his opening remarks, Prof Rathod told the audience that the Palamuru University would soon be setting up a research centre in chemistry department. He asked the students to develop scientific temperament and the urge to find solutions to various problems faced by our society. Prof Rathod said that the PU was offering seed funds to the faculty to further their studies in their chosen areas.
37 research centres in the country
IICT director Dr Srinivas Reddy, in his key-note address said that there were as many as 37 major research centres in the country funded by the Central government. Emphasizing the need to encourage more and more rural background students to take up studies in sciences, Dr Reddy told the students that there are several fellowships available for research in science subjects.
Dr Reddy told girl students to come forward to study and research in science subjects, as there is a gender disparity in our country on this front. He explained various facilities and fellowships available for PhD and other study projects at IICT in Hyderabad. Conference convener Dr Sridhar Reddy said the event got around 100 plus abstracts and 200 registrations.
