Statue of Equality Made in China

Statue of Equality,

Rama Krishna Sangem

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be inaugurating one of world’s tallest statues – Sri Ramanuja Charya – founder of Vaishnavism at Muchintal on the outskirts of Hyderabad on February 5, around 5 pm. The statue costing around Rs 2,000 crore was built in China – Aerosun Corporation in Jiangning Nanjing. This Chinese firm claims to be specialising in making and assembling heavy machinery.

Surprisingly, this is happening at a time when India has boycotted Winter Olympics now being held in Beijing, China as the country has fielded a soldier who took part in Galwan clash with Indian forces two years ago. Moreover, Modi took initiative in banning or boycotting made in China products as a protest against the country after the incident.

The making of Sri Ramanuja statue in China underscores a few things – in spite of our efforts to achieve self-reliance in engineering and technology fields, still we have to depend on China, and we are not in a position to strictly follow our policy of boycott China products. It is not that we should not take the help of China for this statue, which a matter of pride for us all.

But this only shows where we are in terms of taking up huge projects. In fact, we have also taken the help of Chinese firms for making of Sardar Patel statue recently. Our inability to build a tall statue is a reason for Telangana government not being able to set up a tallest Dr BR Ambedkar statue in Hyderabad for the last seven years.

We don’t know whether Modi knows this fact – Ramanuja statue’s Chinese links, but even he cannot do anything at this stage. The statue was brought to India in 1,600 pieces from China and was assembled in Hyderabad. Finally, it looks beautiful with grandeur.
