Supremely confident KCR announces BRS candidates for 115 seats

BRS KCRlist

Rama Krishna Sangem

Supremely confident of striking a hat-trick, CM KCR announced ruling BRS candidates for 115 out of the total 119 seats in Telangana’s assembly on August 21, Monday. KCR also president of BRS has kept his word of naming the party candidates at least four months ahead of the elections. So, KCR has decided to bite the bullet and risked reactions  from those who are not happy with the list.

CM KCR will be contesting from two seats – present Gajwel and Kamareddy – this time. In the list  announced by KCR on the auspicious Panchami of Shravana masam, around 2 pm, KCR has kept four seats vacant for now – Narsapur, Nampally, Jangoan and Goshamahal. Candidates for these seats would be announced later. In 6 seats, he changed the sitting MLAs – Uppal, Boath (ST), Khanapur  (ST), Asifabad (ST), Wyra (ST) and Vemulawada.

No seat adjustment with Left parties

Another notable feature of this list is that there will not be any seat adjustment with the two Left parties – CPI and CPI(M) in the coming assembly elections. There was speculation that KCR may leave a couple of seats each to the two Left parties.  This view emerged as CPI and CPI(M) supported BRS in last year November assembly by-poll in Munugode. There, BRS won by around 10,500 votes margin, thanks to the Left backing.

However, KCR has ruled out possibility of such poll truck with the Left. Still there is some hope among the Left parties leadership that the CM might change his mind on the alliance issue, as elections are three to four months away.  It is to be seen, what steps the Left would take in case, the CM sticks to his decision of not leaving any seats to them. Will they go to other parties?

All the ministers retained

All the 15 members of KCR’s Cabinet are retained and will be contesting again, in 2023 December elections. This shows KCR’s confidence in his government’s positive image among the people. Almost all of those who joined him from other opposition parties after 2018 assembly elections are given tickets. This again shows KCR’s decision to reward the loyalty.

What surprised many is his decision to renominate even those whose image among the public is believed to be not up to the mark. Many thought that this time KCR would replace at least  25-30 sitting MLAs, in view of their anti-incumbency in their constituencies.  For example, even BRS insiders thought sitting MLAs like Vanama Venkateswara Rao (Kothagudem), Bollam Mallaiah Yadav (Kodad) and Shankar Naik (Mahabubabad) might be changed.

But, nothing of that happened. This again displays KCR’s confidence in positive vote to his government’s policies and his own image. When Excel India spoke to some political observers, they said, this may prove to be overconfidence in those MLAs who earned bad reputation over the years. “Finally, KCR will have to pay the price for their negative image, but he seems to be ready to face it,” said a senior journalist from Nizamabad.

Opposition Congress, BJP way behind

KCR’s decision to announce almost all the candidates so early has clearly caught the opposition Congress and BJP by surprise. Though they too were stated to be making efforts to come up with at least first lists in August or September first week, there are no such signs. The process of picking candidates is yet to take off in both Congress and BJP. It may take at least a few weeks before they zero in on short listed nominees for a majority seats.
