A colourful Tree Kingfisher is caught on the camera lens of Green India Challenge founder and former Rajya Sabha MP J Santosh Kumar this Sunday, June 2. Much to the delight of viewers, the Kingfisher is captured with a little small fish in it s mouth. A rare visual to be seen and get on camera. Santosh did a good camera job, for his #WeekendPhotography this week.
Within a day, these posts on X got around 3,500 views, 120 likes, from Santosh’s fans. This green hued Kingfisher is also called White throated Kingfisher, as Heeresh Dubey, pointed in the comments section, due to their colour patterns. These Kingfishers sit on trees but like fishes like other members of its family. But, they are smaller than the regular Kingfishers which mostly thrive on water bodies.
For these White throated Kingfishers, this June is the beginning of breeding season. They build good nests to hatch eggs. Though they are small in size, they are good at hunting prey and feed on insects and worms too. References show that these beautiful birds are seen mostly in tropical countries like ours, India to Thailand and the Gulf. Some decades ago, they are hunted for trade as pets.
June 5, World Environment Day
But, now these White throated Kingfishers are taken out of the endangered list of birds. Still, it is our duty to preserve and conserve them to ensure our biodiversity. As we celebrate June 5, as the World Environment Day, Santosh deserves some credit for propagating awareness on our ecology – that is nothing but local flora and fauna. Sanosh and his team at GIC must be appreciated for their good work !.
