United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak observes fasting on every Thursday in reverence to Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy. Sunak started this fasting since he married to Akshata Murty, daughter of Infosys founder NR Narayana Murty. Sunak’s practice of fasting on Thursdays was revealed by his mother-in-law Sudha Murty in an interview that appeared in social media this week.
Interestingly, Sudha Murthyl known for her social and charity work, claimed credit of Sunak becoming a devotee of Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy to her daughter Akshata. “He (Sunak) is from a Punjabi family that migrated from India 150 years ago. Sunak was introduced to Sri Guru Raghavendra Swamy by my daughter only,” said Sudha Murthy. Narayana Murth family are devotees of Sri Raghavenedra Swamy, Mantrlayam, in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.
Sunak claimed to be a practicing Hindu and carries a Bhagawad Geeta with him and keeps an idol of Lord Ganehsha on his table. His religious status has become an issue in Britain when he became a minister in the Cabinet of Borish Johnson and later PM of the country last year. We can recall on other major global leader who carried a Hindu God is former US president Barack Obama who held a replica of Lord Hanuman in his pocket, though he is a Christian.
Sudha Murty proudly quipped if she made her husband a leading businessman, her daughter made her husband the PM of Great Britain. This is only drive home the point that behind every successful man there is a woman. But, Akshata is not an ordinary woman. 1980 born Akshata studied her MBA in the US and holds 98 per cent shares in infosys. Rishi Sunak and Akshata, with two children, are the 222nd wealthiest family in the UK, with a valuation of 830 million US dollars.
