Governor Jishnu Varma calls for innovation in horticulture

Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has called upon the students to become the ambassadors of knowledge, innovation and sustainable development. He also called for adaptive policies, improved infrastructure and strong public – private partnerships to combat the most pressing horticulture challenges such as climate change, post-harvest losses and market volatility.

The Governor gave the chancellor’s address on the Fourth Convocation of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University which is held on July 1, Tuesday in PJTAU university auditorium at Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. While addressing the governor said that Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has emphasized the need for India to grow smarter and more sustainably. With over 353 million tonnes of horticultural production, India stands as a global leader – second only to China in fruits and vegetables.

“We lead the world in the production of bananas, mangoes and papayas and rank among the top in onions, ginger and okra. ‘Telangana, too, is emerging as a horticultural powerhouse. With horticultural crops cultivated on 12.94 lakh acres and a production of 61.64 lakh metric tonnes, the sector accounts for 34% of the state’s agricultural output from just 7% of its agricultural area. Telangana ranks second in chilli production and third in turmeric”.

Our mangoes are being exported across India and overseas he added. He asked the university to take part in an off campus training program and extend technical support to handhold the farmers of Raj Bhavan adopted the tribal village of Kondaparthi, located in S. Tadvai Mandal of Mulugu District, which has facilitated the installation of masala processing machines capable of producing chilli powder, turmeric powder and other spice blends.

The Governor also appreciated the university and Government of Telangana, which launched an Overseas Fellowship Programme for students of Horticultural and Agricultural Universities to pursue M.S. programs in the USA with 100% to study at Auburn University, Alabama, USA.

Dr. Himanshu Pathak, Director General, ICRISAT, Patancheru, Hyderabad attended the convocation as chief guest and said that India has transformed from a food-deficient nation to one of self-sufficiency and export. Dr. D. Raji Reddy, Vice chancellor offered the  welcome address and presented the progress report  of the university, said a press release from the university.

 

Gold medals to the students

In B.Sc (Hons) Horticulture, GUDISE CHAITHANYA  bagged 4 gold medals viz., SKLTGHU Gold Medal, Dr. Sri Haribabu (Retd. Prof.Hort) Gold Medal,  Vishwa Shanti, Gold Medal and Dr. Nagesh Marri, 1983 APAU Alumnus Gold Medal. KORRA ROSHINI got Dr. Komma Chandrasekhar Reddy Memorial Gold Medal for OGPA Topper in Plant Physiology, Biochemistry and Microbiology courses. KOTHAKAPU MOUNIKA REDDY received Smt. Gajjala Lakshmi & Sri Bali Reddy Gold Medal for OGPA Topper in Horticulture courses.  While, in B.Sc. (Hons) Forestry, TOGITA RENUKA and SUDARSI RAMYA got gold medals.

In POST GRADUATE (M.Sc. Horticulture), ATCHUTA MONIKA SRI NAGINI got two gold medals and SINDHUJA K (Smt. & Sri Boga Chandraiah & Gangu Bai Memorial Gold Medal for toppers in Vegetable Science), RANJITHKUMAR (Smt. Kesar Annamwar Memorial Gold Medal for toppers in Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops) got gold medals. DISHA S.K Nova Icon Gold Medal for toppers in Fruit Science.

The convocation was attended by Dr. Alda Janaiah, Vice Chancellor, PJTAU; Dr. Jnana  Prakash, VC, PVNTTVU, Dr.RK Mathur, Director, IIOR;  Registrar Dr.A.Bhagwan , Dr.J. Cheena, Dr.Seenivasan, Suresh, Laxmi  Narayana, Dr. Prasanth, Dr. Saidaiah, academic council members, professors, students and parents.
