IIT Hyderabad to host SPIC-MACAY event in May-June

IIT Hyderabad is going to host prestigious SPIC MACAY 10th International Convention from 26th May 2025 to 1st June 2025. The event’s official poster was unveiled on 4th January by the Honorable Governor of Telangana at Raj Bhavan, marking a major milestone in this prestigious journey.

This year’s convention promises to be an exceptional cultural event that celebrates the timeless beauty of Indian classical music and dance. Renowned cultural artists from across India will grace the stage, bringing the rich heritage of Indian classical music, dance, and art to life. Their performances will showcase the depth and diversity of India’s artistic traditions, offering audiences an immersive experience in cultural excellence, said a press release.

It aims to bring together students, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from around the world for an unforgettable experience of artistic exchange and immersive learning through intense workshops.  As a prelude to this grand event, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, the legendary sarod maestro and Padma Vibhushan awardee, mesmerized the audience at IIT Hyderabad with his soulful performance on 6th January 2025. His concert marked the beginning of a series of cultural events leading up to the SPIC MACAY 10th International Convention.

 

Classical music lowers stress

Research shows that listening to or practicing classical music can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone), improve focus, and foster emotional resilience. The meditative nature of ragas aligns closely with mindfulness practices, helping students, faculty, and staff well-being.

Prof. B.S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, announced that in the lead-up to the convention, a concert by a renowned Indian artist will be held each month. As part of this initiative, a live mesmerizing concert by the legendary Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Padma Vibhushan awardee, was held at IIT Hyderabad on 6 th January 2025.

The evening was a celebration of India’s rich classical heritage, as legendary Ustad Amjad Ali Khan’s masterful rendition captivated students, faculty, and guests alike. His intricate compositions and seamless improvisations highlighted the timeless beauty of Indian classical music, leaving the audience in awe.

Speaking after the performance, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan expressed his joy in contributing to SPIC MACAY’s mission of preserving and promoting India’s cultural legacy.  The performance not only showcased musical brilliance but also set the tone for the upcoming concerts, creating anticipation and excitement for the grand convention in May 2025.
