BRS president and Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao will oppose ruling BJP’s efforts to bring in a Bill in Parliament to enforce Uniform Civil Code (UCC), said All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on July 10, Monday. Owaisi led a delegation of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) functionaries to CM KCR at Secretariat in Hyderabad this evening.
Talking to media persons after meeting CM KCR, MP Owaisi said that UCC was against to the spirit of divergent culture of India.”This will harm the mosaic of India where different identifies have been protected by the Constitution for long. This UCC is not just against to Muslims, but also to Hindus who practice different cultural practices,” said Owaisi. Moreover, the ruling BJP was acting in haste in rushing through the Bill, he pointed out.
Owaisi leading a delegation to KCR assumes significance in view of coming monsoon session of parliament from July 20. There are indications that the government might introduce a bill on UCC and make efforts to pass it if possible in the current Lok Sabha only. Owaisi has been making efforts to convince leaders of various opposition parties to oppose the bill.
Importantly, CM KCR, according to Owaisi, has said that he would soon get in touch with some other opposition parties too to mobilise their support to oppose the UCC bill in parliament. “For this, we thank KCR,” said Owaisi. It is to be seen, if KCR would be contacting AAP CM Arvind Kejriwal too, as the latter has extended his ‘in principle support’ to the UCC bill
Owaisi to meet CM Jagan
Owaisi said that he would try to meet Andhra Pradesh CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy too soon, to mobilise his backing to oppose the UCC bill. “I am trying to get the appointment of CM Jagan and will meet him soon in this regard,” the AIMIM president said. AIMPLB and some sections of Muslims have been opposing UCC. Congress has already made it clear they will oppose UCC to be rushed through in haste.
