Rama Krishna Sangem
After a week gap, former Rajya Sabha MP J Santosh Kumar is back to his Sunday photography. This Sunday, July 7, he clicked posted beautiful closeups of a rare brown eagle, in its habitat, a treetop. The four pics of an eagle show us different closeups – a bird sitting, closeups of its mouth opened. We can see is glowing bright yellow eyes and curvy short beak wide open.
Santosh posted the pics on X in the morning and got over 1,400 views and 140 likes by evening. The brown eagle clicked by the former MP who founded Green India Challenge is a rare bird in our environs. It bright yellow eyes are a sight to behold, and tell us long stories. In fact, eagle’s eyes colour change with their age – dark brown to yellow over the years ago they grow. The one we see here is of about 4-5 years old.
Eagles are known for their sharp and powerful eye vision. They can clearly see objects on the earth from a distance of about 4-5 km. That’s how we got the phrase of eagle eyed! The brown eagles which are from a family of more than 100 subspecies, are seen all over the world in different shapes and sizes. An eagle can fly high in the sky but can catch a prey on the earth, within seconds, thanks to its sharp eyes and strong wings.
Now endangered birds
Eagles are close to humans, right from our known civilization history. They have mythological backdrops – our own Jatayu in Ramayana – to trusted companions of early days hunters. Still they are now endangered birds – due to various reasons. Most modern industries treat them as threats – airports to wind turbines – so that they can shoot them down. Loss of habitats are the other reason for their fast extinction.
We need to educate our children about these beautiful – powerful birds and the ways to save them.
