Residents of Sahara States, a prominent gated community spread over 42 acres and home to over 900 families in the eastern part of Hyderabad, have taken a significant step towards water conservation. Under the consultancy of Igniting Minds – Walk for Water Foundation and guided by its founder and community resident, Mr. Karunakar Reddy, the Sahara States Residents Welfare Association has launched a project to conserve 1500 million litres( 15 core liters) of water annually.
This initiative involves the restoration of 12 rainwater harvesting pits and two open wells within the community. Sahara States is renowned for its lush greenery, well-maintained parks, and vibrant children’s play areas. The community also hosts an age-old Shiva temple and is home to a diverse population from various parts of the country, said a press release on June 18, Tuesday.
Recently elected President Syed Johney Bhai, along with the Welfare Association Managing Committee, has spearheaded this water conservation project. Their aim is to recharge groundwater and make Sahara States a water-positive community. The community plans to achieve this by not only restoring water harvesting pits and wells but also by recycling sewage water and composting solid and liquid waste.
Urban water crisis increasing
Urban cities across the globe are facing significant water stress, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate change. This initiative by Sahara States is a proactive response to these challenges. By conserving water, the community is addressing not only the immediate need for sustainable water management but also contributing to the broader fight against global warming and climate change.
Air pollution and other environmental issues are closely linked with water scarcity and climate change. The efforts to recycle sewage water and compost waste are part of a comprehensive strategy to reduce the environmental footprint of the community. Such initiatives help mitigate air pollution by promoting green practices and reducing the dependency on external water sources.
At the launch event, several key members of the Welfare Association were present, including: Syed Johney, President, Srinivas Rao, Vice President, Prabhakar Reddy, Narashimma Goud, EC Member, Krishna Reddy, Temple Secretary, Mr. Narshimmachary, Retired MRO,
