In a major boost to Telangana’s initiatives to emerge as a global industrial hub, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) on March 2, Thursday signed a deal with Foxconn Chairman Yong Liu. This deal will lead to setting up an electronics unit, mostly related to making of mobile phone parts, surrounding Hyderabad city and create around 1 lakh jobs. Telangana IT Minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) is the man behind the deal.
Foxconn, full name of Hon Hai Technology Company, is a Taiwanese giant (its holding company Hon Hai Precision Industry Company had Chinese shares) known as world’s 5th largest manufacturer of electronic chips, semiconductors and mobile phone parts. In fact, Foxconn makes most of Apple’s iPhone parts from its units in China. After the US sanctions on China since recently iPhone is shifting its making units to India.
Foxconn is in the news after it signed a mega 20 billion US dollars deal with Vedanta group to set up a semiconductor chips making factory in Gujarat. This is part of Government of India’s push to promote semiconductors manufacturing in the country through its PLI (productivity linked incentives) scheme. Apple has announced that 25 per cent of its iPhones exports will be from India in the next three years.

KCR hosts Liu
CM KCR rolled out a royal welcome to Young Liu and hosted a lunch at his official residence, Pragathi Bhavan on Thursday. KTR personally received Liu at the residence and introduced KCR who in turn introduced ministers Harish Rao and Sabita, chief secretary Santi Kumari, IAS and DGP Anjani Kumar, IPS, special CSes Arvind Kumar, IAS, Rama Krishna Rao, IAS, CMO principal secretary Narsing Rao and secretary Smitha Sabharwal, IAS
KCR also introduced local MLA Manchireddy Kishan Reddy, industries additional secretary Vishnuvardhan Reddy and director of electronics Sujay Karampudi, among others. Liu led a delegation of executives from his company. What lent personal touch is KCR presenting a hand written greeting card to Liu as March 2 marked his birthday. Liu met PM Narendra Modi in Delhi on March 1.
