Rama Krishna Sangem
BRS Rajya Sabha MP and Green India Challenge founder leader J Santosh Kumar has clicked in his camera some vultures in his recent visit to Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala. The vultures sit majestically on trees just as the MP trained his camera guns on them. He posted the pics on X on March 10, Sunday, as part of his #weeklyphotography mission since the last two years.
The X post got 2,380 views,116 likes by evening. Many lauded the young MP’s efforts to bring public gaze on vultures which are beneficial to our society. Some mentioned the birds mythological importance while others stressed on the need to educate people to save them. Of course, those who knew more about Vultures said capturing them needed some patient effort. In the past too, Santosh posted vultures photos on X.
Besides all this, what we at Excel India appreciate Santosh about is his commitment to his passion of photography for the cause of ecology and wildlife. He continued this Sunday photography just as in three weeks his current Rajya Sabha membership ends, by April 2 . We wish he gets back to Rajya Sabha soon again. Because, we need Rajya Sabha MPs who are committed to environment and green cause.
Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala
Santosh on X said: “Behold the stark grandeur of vultures from Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary trip! With only 5,000 to 13,000 left the wild, these crucial yet endangered cleaners face a crisis. Poisoning from treated carcasses brings their numbers down. Appreciate the commitment of @dhniesh_ifs and @ForestKerala in safeguarding these noble birds, their conservation strides give us hope”. Safe breeding sites and boosting protective measures are needed, he felt.
Located in Waynad (Lok Sabha seat now held by Rahul Gandhi) at Sulthan Bathery in Neelgiris belt of Kerala, Muthanga sanctuary is a rainforest. Spread over 350 sq km, this sanctuary, home for variety of wildlife and flora, connects forst belts of Karnataka’s Bandipur, Tamil Nadu’s Mudumalai and Kerala’s Waynad parks. Muthanga is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries established in India in 1973.
A must watch for us all, particularly children, Muthanga. The best time to visit it is June to October, say Kerala tourism department. You know what, there are many buses and other transport facilities to reach this sanctuary.
